Book vending machines in the metró

When I first saw them I though they were snack machines but when I got closer I realised there were no Mars bars, Coca-Cola or M&Ms and in their place were books! In fact in many central stations in São Paulo you can only find book vending machines, nothing else is for sale on the platforms or hallways. And they're quite affordable too at between R$2 and R$5 (1 to 2€) although there does seem to be a disproportionate number of religious books making me wonder if this is another covert money making operation by the IURD (see old post on drive-through churches..)

That´s amazing bro. I like the concept i´m hungy i gotta eat, i´m hollow i gotta read. Sad they are so unitopic. But anyway cool. And hapily linked with the holy capitalism principles... what can i say i want one (book machine!!)

Pierre,

I looked at the pictures you posted of the book vending machines and there are only 2 books with religious themes, if you look closely, slots number 15 and 25 are the same book title with a different cover, perhaps a different edition.
The second book, is actually the History of Popes, yes, religious, but with a significan Historical impotance as well. Don't get me wrong, I am not religious at all, and it was quite a relief to see only two religious books in the selection.
The rest are the most classic tittles of the Brazilian/Portuguese literature and some new best sellers.

Hi Ray,

I think the most surprising thing about this and the reason it got a post dedicated to it was the existence of book vending machines on the underground. I think it's great. That said, even 2 or 3 books out of 15 being religion related (all Christian by the way) is for me quite high, something that you would not find in the top seller list in London, for example, unless of course you count Dan Brown's, Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons as religious text...
